The Best Rifles for Men 50 and Older

These are the best rifles for older men.

There are many rifles on the market these days. It can be a bit overwhelming when it comes to shopping for a new one. Today we're looking at rifles for older gun owners for both the shooting range and for hunting.

When it comes to hunting, it's especially important to keep older hunters afield because more and more American hunters are hanging up their guns for good these days.

These rifles should give you an idea of what to look at in the gun shop to help keep you or an older loved one in the field for a bit longer.

Colt LE6920

This is one of the most popular AR-15 platforms, and it makes the list for a few reasons. First off, the recoil is minimal and can be negated even more with the right stock. This makes it ideal for men who may have shoulder issues.

Second, this is a rifle that is very highly customizable. A variety of sights, foregrips, and other accessories can make this rifle easy to shoot for just about anyone. This is basically the civilian version of the M-16, but in a carbine package.

Marlin 1894

Is there a super "old-school" hunter in your family? You might consider the beautiful Marlin 1894 lever-action rifle for them to keep them in the woods a bit longer.

It's chambered in .357 Magnum, which is big enough to drop a whitetail deer at close range. But it also won't hurt a shoulder with its recoil. It does lose some long-range capability, since it's a revolver cartridge after all, but it is a great gun for swamp or thick brush when you need to get quick shots in a hurry.

Winchester Model 70

You really can't go wrong with this classic hunting rifle. This rifle was first introduced all the way back in 1936 and is still a staple in deer camps to this day. If we only had a dollar for every deer that has fallen to a Winchester Model 70...

The main reason this makes the list is because of the huge variety of calibers you can buy this rifle in. Looking to hunt whitetails? It comes in .30-06 Springfield. African safari? It can be found in much larger calibers like .375 H&H Magnum, .458 Winchester Magnum, and even the ridiculously huge .470 Capstick. We recommend the thickest shoulder pad you can find if you go that route!

Remington Model 700

Another one of the most famous bolt-action rifles of all time, the Remington Model 700 has seen action in conflicts all over the world as one of the preferred sniper rifles of choice by the United States armed forces. For older men, the design will likely be familiar and simple to use.

Just like the Model 70, the 700 also comes in a variety of different calibers that make this a solid big-game rifle for anywhere from the plains of Africa to the western Montana backcountry. Remington has also recently added the ability to adjust some variants of the rifle more in recent years as you can see in the video above.

Ruger American Rifle

The Ruger American Rifle is one to consider if you're on a budget. These rifles are a simple bolt-action design, but they also have become very popular for their reliability and accuracy. The trigger has an adjustable pull weight, which could be helpful for men with arthritis in the hands.

They are also lightweight thanks to their synthetic stocks and come in a variety of calibers to fit many different uses.

Smith & Wesson M&P 15 Sport

For anyone looking at semi-automatic rifles, the Smith & Wesson M&P 15 Sport series of rifles aren't a bad choice. These rifles are known for both their quality and reliability. Because it's an AR platform, the recoil is going to light. They are also built to take a variety of different sights and accessories to customize the gun to adjust to any need.

This rifle can be found in larger calibers for big game, but also in rounds as small as .22 Long Rifle for someone just looking for something to plink with.

Savage Arms 110

Here's another great option for anyone looking to keep hunting as they get older. The Savage 110 is available in a variety of calibers to fit whatever your hunting needs may be. Savage also keeps improving the design, making it easier to shoot and handle with each tweak.

They've responded well to market demands, and recently introduced a model in .450 Bushmaster. This round was among the straight-wall cartridges legalized only recently here in southern Michigan for deer hunting, and quickly became one of the most popular rounds in the state for its tack-driving ability.

Browning X-Bolt

The Browning X-Bolt design is a bit newer than some of the other classics on this list, but it has quickly gained a great following for its light weight and crisp, adjustable trigger weight system that older shooters with arthritis might find more pleasing than some of the others on this list.

This rifle comes in a variety of calibers and stock configurations for pretty much any game you could want to hunt.
