Throwback Thursday: Bass Fishing in 1979

Here’s a look at a cutting-edge tactic from almost four decades ago.

It’s surprising to think tournament-style bass fishing has been around for only 50 years. The first B.A.S.S tournament occurred in June 1967, and as we all know, has exploded since then. However, we have the opportunity in this video to see what some of cutting-edge tactics were when modern bass fishing was still in its teens.

That’s how you make a bass angler. Nothing is more exciting than frogging through the lily pads, or topwater bite from a bass in general. You could almost hear the surprise and excitement in the video when the bass hit close to the boat. I blame the older audio for him not actually sounding excited.

The video also demonstrates a change in mindset from catch-and-keep to catch-and-release fishing that’s more common today. It seemed like one of the anglers wanted to keep every fish that was legal, while the other guy let them all go.
