Where Would we be Without the Venerable Beaver? Watch and Find Out

The amazing beaver is more than just a builder and an engineer. It's a keystone species of major importance.

The North American continent would be just another ho-hum place for people and other wildlife if not for the venerable beaver and all it does for nature.

As a 'Keystone' species, the beaver is responsible for maintaining a critical role in water purification and creating wetlands that makes a habitat for any number of animals including fish, birds, and large mammals.

Did you know that there were once over 400 million beavers in North America?

Of course beavers were hunted almost to extinction for things like fur and their castoreum (which is an ingredient in some perfumes)

The crazy thing is the fact that the oldest beaver dam ever discovered was 100,000 years old which was before humans ever inhabited the continent!

Native Americans have held the beaver in great esteem for their entire history and even talk about them in their oral history.
