Wife of Cyclist Speaks Out After He Dies in Freak Racing Accident

The wife of a cyclist is speaking out after he passed away in a freak racing accident. She saw the entire thing happen on YouTube. Sadly, cyclist Colin Wilson died after a crash.

"I thought, 'Wait Colin fall?' and then I just saw all the blood and I say, 'Father Lord, something gone wrong,' I just thought he hit his head," Tricia Jeffers told the Trinidad and Tobago Guardian.

She thought he had hit his head, but he had collided with a fence, injuring his neck. The cyclist had been competing in the the 2026 Easter International Cycling Grand Prix at Skinner Park, San Fernando. Phillip Watts, minister of the Trinidad and Tobago Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs, said in a news release the cyclist had died.

"Tragically, during a six-lap Masters 40-49 event, Wilson was involved in a fatal crash," he stated. "It is understood he attempted to avoid a fallen cyclist but collided with the fencing lining the track, sustaining critical injuries on his neck. Despite immediate medical attention, Wilson succumbed to his injuries."

Cyclist Dies in Freak Accident

Jeffers said that she immediately drove to the scene upon seeing the crash. The couple shared three kids together.

"Even as I was driving down the road to the south," she recalled to the outlet, "I wasn't expecting to hear death, I just thought he would have been in the hospital. I thought I would have spent the night in the hospital and come up the road in the morning, but I wasn't expecting to reach there and hear that he died."

Cycling Federation President Rowena Williams paid tribute to the cyclist after his passing.

"Wilson was more than a champion cyclist; he was a pioneer who inspired generations of young athletes in Trinidad and Tobago," the minister said. "His passion for the sport and steadfast commitment to excellence will be forever remembered. This is a profound loss for our sporting community, and my heart goes out to his loved ones during this difficult time."

His wife did not expect the tagedy.

"I really and truly hoping that something comes out of this, because nobody expected this," Jeffers said.
