My dogs eat cat poop anytime they have a chance. They also eat rabbit poop and anything they can possibly find in the pasture grass where we live. Gross!
There are many reasons your dog may enjoy eating cat poop, but it is not because this is a doggie delicacy.
What is coprophagia?
The American Kennel Club (AKC) tells us that when dogs eat cat poop, it is actually called "coprophagia."
"Eating poop, a habit called coprophagia, can be the result of a dietary deficiency, but in most cases, it is just the product of exploration, which can become a bad habit."
Cat poop probably smells like cat food, which to a dog is delicious.
The term coprophagia doesn't only refer to dogs eating cat poop, but any species' feces, including their own.
They enjoy the taste
Of course, they do. It is time to put up a baby gate so your dog doesn't have access to your cat's litter box anymore. Cat's poop should not be part of your dog's diet!
Experts say that once they get a taste for cat poop, there is no turning back.
Nutritional deficiency
According to Honest Paws, this could be a vitamin deficiency:
"Another cause behind dogs eating cat poop is that they are experiencing a vitamin deficiency or perhaps they are not getting enough calories per day. If you feel that your dog's habit may be triggered due to a nutritional deficiency, it is important to speak to your veterinarian regarding dietary changes that may help to resolve the issue."
Your vet may recommend adding fat, fiber, or protein in order to make sure your dog's diet is balanced.
Environmental or behavioral triggers
Anxiety may cause a wide range of behavior issues. Experts say that large amounts of stress can cause your dog to act in strange ways, such as developing a habit like coprophagia. Your dog may also be anxious, bored, or seeking attention.
Why is cat poop bad for dogs?
The AKC says that it can be! Your dog can contract a few different species of internal parasites from cat poop.
"While many dogs eat cat poop, and they're fine, eating any poop carries the potential for the dog to contract harmful bacteria and parasites. Some of these bacteria, like salmonella, for example, can be transmitted to humans."
Always rule out any type of medical condition with your vet. There are chronic diseases that make pets feel incredibly hungry.
If your dog's health is a problem than you may find them eating their own poop or your cat's poop. Always check the nutritional value of your dog's food as cat feces may have a high level of protein. Some pet owners may assume this is just a quick doggie snack but there are multiple reasons dogs eat cat poop.
Dog owners always need to watch bowel movements! Keep your dog away from cat litter as poop-eating is a 'snacking' habit you'll want to break right away.
