Smoke, fog, mist, and other foul weather conditions are a challenge for autonomous driving systems.
MIT Media Lab researchers have now created a system that not only gauges the distance of objects accurately in foggy conditions, better than the human eye could.
This video features a small-scale system test, using objects placed into a 1-meter-long wide box before it is filled with dense fog. A laser fires into the box, with a camera measuring the time it takes for the laser's reflections to return.
Results showed that human sight could discern objects 36cm into the box, while the MIT system gauges depth correctly at 57cm.
This helps resolved critical issue while using autonomous driving systems, one which could increase both pedestrian and occupant safety immeasurably.
