Here's the Latest on Self-Driving Car Bills

Congress' latest self-driving car legislation, the Self Drive and AV START Acts, have faced stalled progress in its quest to impose rules around testing and deployment.

In what can be chalked up to competing government priorities, the AV START Act mandates self-driving cars would have looser guidelines around self-driving vehicle safety rules, giving suppliers and states more freedom to test with safety exemptions.

In late March, public interest groups demanded a reduced number of vehicles receiving safety standard exemptions, asking for minimum performance standards.

The Self Drive Act is more comprehensive in scope, providing a regulatory framework for all states that would dictate rules for each state, setting rules around testing and marketing before vehicles are fully developed.
