Gordon Ramsay Catches and Cooks the Very Ugly Conger Eel

Conger eels are among the largest eels on the planet. However, not too many people think about eating them.

Celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay thinks it's sad that no one wants to eat them. Watch as he catches, cooks and serves up a conger eel.

Warning: This is Gordon Ramsay, so there's a lot of swearing, and it isn't bleeped out in this video.

Why don't people eat conger eels? Because they're so ... ugly (Ramsay puts it more colorfully, though). He says they're delicious and sustainable. And they can offer up a lot of meat.

In 2015, one was caught off the coast of Britain that was 20 feet long and weighed 131 pounds. Ramsay doesn't catch one that big in the video. He uses rod and reel, fishing over a wreck where congers like to live.

The eels aren't easy to catch because they live in the wreck. They sneak out to go at the bait and then swim back into hiding. Ramsay loses several as he fishes with one of the few captains that go after the eel, but eventually gets one over the rail. Then, it's time to cook it.

Ramsay makes a bouillabaisse soup with various vegetables and aromatics that are combined with the eel and blended.

Back at the fish and chip shop the boat captain runs, customers try the soup. They're amazed at how good it is.

So, will you be trying conger eel any time soon?
