Girl, 9, Killed by Dogs in Detroit, Owner in Custody

You can see in the news segment from ABC 7 News that the dogs are categorized as friendly so this incident didn't make sense to anyone in the neighborhood or the owner. However, an alley with three dogs and a young girl all together while she rides her bike sounds like a recipe for a disaster. It could have been guarding behavior or was food involved? Clearly, there was a trigger.

This is a horrible story with a horrific outcome.

The girl, 9, was killed while riding her bicycle in an alley in Detroit.

She was attacked by dogs that killed her quickly and neighbors tried to save her with CPR. The dogs escaped their loose fence according to The Detroit News. Many tried to help her and one of the dogs was shot.

Neighbors want to know why these dogs attacked the girl and in the news segment confirmed that the dogs are with animal control. The owner is in police custody. The dogs were Pit Bulls or pittie mixes and this, of course, adds to this terrible narrative about bully breeds being banned which I strongly disagree with and believe the owners are responsible for setting their dogs up for success.

Bite prevention is very important when it comes to children and dogs. These are from the CDC:

Don't:
  1. Don't approach an unfamiliar dog.
  2. Don't run from a dog.
  3. Don't panic or make loud noises.
  4. Don't disturb a dog that is sleeping, eating, or caring for puppies.
  5. Don't pet a dog without allowing it to see and sniff you first.
  6. Don't encourage your dog to play aggressively.

These may help some folks but there are plenty of things that trigger dogs to bite so this shortlist is a good one.

This sweet 9-year-old-girl was killed and this breaking news absolutely breaks out hearts. The owner of the dogs should be charged as three dogs shouldn't be wandering the neighborhood. If they were safely in their home they wouldn't be with animal control where they will likely be euthanized.

We don't want to report about Pit Bull attacks and dogs mauling anyone. The dog attack could have been avoided if the dogs had been with their owner behind a fence. We send our condolences to this girl's family. What a terrible and tragic incident that should have been avoided.

The dog's owner is at fault and should be charged. Now the care of his dogs starts and ends with animal control. When you watch the news segment you can see how horrific this must have been for everyone involved. The bystanders tried to save her and one dog was shot as a result.

This neighborhood will be scarred (hearing screams from a little girl must have been horrifying) for many months to come and what's worse everyone will be afraid of Pit Bulls which are a loving breed. These three dogs could have been any mix or breed of dog.
