Father Has Children Taken Away After Family Poisoned By Mushrooms While Living Off The Grid

A father has had his children taken away by authorities after taking them off the grid. The entire family was poisoned after foraging for and eating mushrooms.

51-year-old Nathan Trevallion lived in a remote farmhouse with his wife, Catherine Birmingham, and their three kids. Trevallion wanted the family to live off the grid. But the whole family needed medical help in 2024 after being poisoned by mushrooms. Unfortunately, after the incident, authorities chose to remove the children from the home. They placed the children in a foster home.

He told Corriere Della Sera, "Yes, unfortunately, it happened, and it was terrible. They took our children away from us."

Since then, the family has lawyered up with hopes of getting the children back. "Otherwise the shock would have been truly unbearable," the family's lawyer, Giovanni Angelucci, said. The parents have public support with over 13,000 signatures supporting the family. Supporters believe that the family has the right to choose to live off the grid if they wanted to.

While living off the grid, the family used solar power for electricity and a well for water. The parents homeschooled the children. However, authorities say the children didn't have proper healthcare.

However, the family's lawyer said the children were in perfect health before being removed. Minus the whole mushroom poisoning.

"They are in better physical condition than most children,'" he said. "There is no evidence of maltreatment."

To drum up support, Trevallion has invited local media to tour his family home and view how they live everyday.

He said, "There are cracks in the walls, but the walls are strong. We are a clean family. Every day we sweep the floor."

Trevallion and Birmingham also said, "We consciously changed our own lives... to provide our children with parents that are able to be at home with them, food, air and water that is clean, and an environment that not only is beneficial to their brain and physical development but, most importantly, a connection."
