Arrows out of a Ruger 10/22? Yep, that is possible!
Rimfire rifles like the Ruger 10/22 are arguably some of the more versatile firearms on the planet. There is a plethora of practical uses for them including hunting, survival, and just plan fun out on the range. We never expected to see one of these guns shooting arrows though.
YouTuber Top Shot Dustin picked up a unique conversion kit from a company called Swivel Machine that effectively turns this rifle into a super powerful type of airbow.
The kit makes use of a specialized barrel and blanks to propel the arrows down range at a high rate of speed. We have never seen anything quite like this kit before.
We are not sure who first came up with this idea, but it does seem to work. As Dustin mentioned, the company's website does indeed state that you can effectively turn a 10/22 into a tranquilizer gun using this setup. The arrows do not seem to hold up to abuse, but that is something that can be refined over time to make this design even better.
Usually, Dustin runs these things through a chronograph to get a sense of the speeds of the ballistics. According to the Swivel Machine website, this kit produces velocities of 435 feet per second which makes it faster than many crossbows and airbows on the market today. Of course, such a setup is unlikely to be legal for big game in any state. Except for maybe feral hogs in Texas. We would be curious to see how it performed on them with a broadhead. The arrow speeds are most certainly there. The company's website says the idea behind this kit was to make it possible to hunt deer with a rimfire.
It will be interesting to see if this type of conversion takes off and becomes more popular in the future. And how state wildlife agencies respond to such conversions. At the very least, it looks like a lot of fun at the range with your buddies if nothing else!
