Winter weather caused a massive pileup in Michigan on Monday. More than 100 vehicles crashed into each other on a busy highway, causing multiple injuries.
The blame was the frigid conditions. The Ottawa County Sheriff's Office responded to calls about a multi-vehicle pileup on on I-196 near 64th Avenue in Zeeland Township.
Taking to Facebook, the sheriff's office explained what happened.
They wrote, "The Sheriff's Office is actively responding to a multi-vehicle crash on I-196 near 64th Avenue in Zeeland Township. I-196 is closed in both directions between Hudsonville and Zeeland. Buses from Hudsonville Public Schools and MAX Transit are being used to transport stranded motorists from the scene to Hudsonville High School. Once brought to the school, they will be able to summon assistance or schedule rides to pick them up from the HHS cafeteria."
100-Vehicle Pileup
The police continued, "Motorists currently stranded on scene should remain inside their vehicles until they are able to board a bus for transportation to Hudsonville High School. We are asking the public to avoid driving today, especially in this area, due to hazardous conditions."
The office added at the time, "All lanes of travel have since been re-opened.
Both directions of I-196 in Hudsonville between the 67 mile marker and 64 mile marker are currently shut down while the Sheriff's Office works to clear crashes. Motorists are being asked to seek an alternate route. This post will be updated once the roadway is clear."
In total, nine to 12 people were injured in the crash. Fortunately, no one died, but several people ended up at the hospital due to the pileup. Drive safe out there.
