What Do You Get When You Cross a Kayak Paddle with a Fishing Reel?

Back in 2015, Ron Shiflett had a crazy thought. What would happen if you combined a kayak paddle with a fishing pole?

The answer is the fishing paddle.

Shiflett attached a reel to a lightweight kayak paddle, and a new way to fish was born.

"Where the paddle really performs nicely is when you're trolling for fish, the action of the paddle in the water is a natural attractant to fish, it's a natural jig action," Shiflett said.

That's right. A kayaker can cast out a lure from the fishing paddle and then paddle across the water.

The company, which incorporated May 2016, is called Shiflett Fishing Paddle Co.

Of course, it wasn't just as simple as attaching a reel to a kayak paddle. After coming up with the idea, Shiflett spent a lot of time searching for anything similar to his idea.

Nothing came up in his research. So, he acquired domestic and international patents for the fishing paddle, and the company was born.

The company started to push the product down South earlier this year. He says sales have been brisk.

He's getting distribution deals and has heard of interest in the product in Europe and Asia.
