Stealing a keyless entry car shouldn't be this easy...
In this clip, watch two thieves clad in all-white jumpsuits tinker a locked keyless entry Mercedes door in a victim's driveway before unlocking it and driving away in less than a minute.
Part of a string of thefts called 'relay crimes' in Britain's West Midlands region, the high tech theft uses a relay box, or a box capable of catching signals through walls and windows. Relay boxes allow the car's electronic key to transmit a signal to the box, which in turn, gets fooled into thinking its owner is present and unlocks the doors.
To prevent these thefts, West Midlands Police have suggested using a Thatcham-approved steering lock, which is placed over the entire steering wheel as a physical barrier. Separately, it is always a good idea to visit the dealership to discuss software updates and how it is addressing forced entry like this.
