Texas Hunter Takes Out Feral Hog With 40mm Cannon and Grape Shot

This hog hunter decided to load a 40mm cannon with grape shot.

Hog hunting is unique for a lot of reasons, most of which involve looser regulations and the ability to get creative.

Because feral hogs post such a threat to ecosystems in the South, wildlife agencies want hunters to shoot as many as they can. This means open seasons, minimal regulations on shooting hours or shooting methods. It also means no bag limits and endless fun.

Because of the laid-back regulation on the sport, many Texas hunters have taken quite the interest in contributing to the eradication of this invasive species. And, if you know anything about Texans, you know they generally follow the "go big or go home" mentality.

This guy absolutely does just that when he sets up a 40mm cannon 25 yards from a feeder.

You have to wonder how someone even comes up with the idea to try something like this. I suppose it's probably a matter of already trying everything else, right? I mean people have already hunted hogs at night with thermal imaging optics. They've already shot them from helicopters, air boats and pickup trucks.

Why wouldn't someone think to up the stakes and and try a small cannon? Especially since Texas wildlife officials basically have an "anything goes" attitude when it comes to legal methods of take for these animals.

However, it did sound like he had already tried hunting with the cannon before and had trouble. So, he decided to resort to grape shot, which is more or less a supersized version of buckshot.

The results showed it was certainly effective, though, as he was able to smoke that pig from 25 yards!

Congrats on a job well done, sir! Few people could actually pull this off!
