People Magazine shared that the Schönbrunn Zoo is "the world's oldest operating zoo." It is a place that is beloved by many, but now it is harboring a devastating loss. One of the zoo's blackbuck antelopes was shot and killed by an unknown gunman, leaving everyone stunned, according to AFP News. The zoo's director, Stephan Hering-Hagenbeck, assured the public that despite the violence displayed, the safety of the zoo animals and guests remains his top priority.
AFP reported that the shot came from outside of the animal's enclosure. Additionally, it is believed that the unknown gunman shot and killed the young antelope overnight while the zoo was closed on Saturday. After the zookeeper found the dead animal, a veterinarian performed a necropsy. It was during that exam that they found the suspected gunshot wound.
The zoo reported the incident to law enforcement and launched an official investigation into the matter.
Not The First Incident At A Zoo
Unfortunatley, this is not the first incident reported at a zoo. Zoos have been topics of conversation for a long time, mainly over the debate of whether or not they are ethical. Certain zoos have even been sparking anger online for allegations of animal abuse. At a zoo in Thailand, a man was arrested after he snuck into the famous pygmy hippo Moo Deng's enclosure. I will never understand those who have a desire to harm animals.
Hopefully, this investigation proves fruitful, and the unknown gunman who killed the young antelope is caught.
