Sweet Senior Pup Jackie Wins Westminster for Rescues

The Hallmark Channel hosted its own kind of Westminster.

As soon as the real Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show ended, the Hallmark Channel announced they would hold their own kind of dog show. This one would only feature rescue dogs and shelter dogs, making sure to give mixed breeds their time in the spotlight. The mission of the competition? To end pet homelessness, one special dog at a time.

The American Rescue Dog Show aired on the Hallmark Channel on Feb. 19, hosted by Rebecca Romijn and Rich Eisen. Celebrity judges Linda Blair, Rick Springfield, Brandon McMillan, and Ross Matthews crowned a very special senior dog, who is now the world's first Best in Rescue winner.

"We are proud to honor rescue pets and raise awareness of how truly special these animals are," said Bill Abbott, President and CEO, Crown Media Family Networks which owns the Hallmark Channel. "There are beautiful animals available at local shelters and we encourage our viewers to choose adoption through our pet programming, which is at the heart of our brand."

Meet Jackie, the 11-year-old Labrador Retriever mix.

Jackie was left at the shelter when she was 10 years old. Because of her senior status, she was scheduled to be euthanized. Luckily, the rescue organization A Purposeful Rescue stepped in and saved Jackie just in time. The non-profit focuses on rescuing senior dogs from high-kill Los Angeles area shelters. Now the senior winner shares a roof with two kids and three other rescue dogs.

This sweet girl won the Best in Rescue round with her owner Debbie Bloom before taking the championship title. Her favorite toy is a pink flamingo and her favorite treat is cooked broccoli, she can't get enough. Jackie loves to swim and is grateful for her chance in the spotlight.

Other adorable categories in the rescue show included:

  • Best in Couch Potato
  • Best in Fetching
  • Best in Kissing
  • Best in Listening
  • Best in Senior Dog
  • Best in Snoring

Basset Hounds to English Bulldogs to every mixed mutt in between competed for the titles, each with their own heartwarming stories. The Petco Foundation donated $75,000 as prize money that was distributed to the winners.
