Hunting Gear Review: KUIU Ultra Merino 145 Zip-T

This comfortable long sleeve from the ultralight apparel company is a perfect addition to your layering system for hunting year-round.

I've long been a merino wool evangelist. Whether you're hiking, hunting, or just enjoying the great outdoors, merino is the best next-to-skin fabric for regulating body temperature in just about any climate.

It boasts breathability and moisture-wicking properties, plus it's odor-resistant even when you're sweating bullets in the field. And unlike most wool, it lacks that itchy, scratchy feeling while maintaining durability.

KUIU kicked it up a notch with its Nuyarn technology, which omits twists in the merino and leaves it even softer with more loft and stretch.

KUIU went through the steps of putting together this great video that explains and depicts it well.

Featuring Nuyarn technology, their Ultra Merino 145 Zip-T is my latest favorite for an early-season archery standalone or quick-drying base layer on late-season hunts.

The merino/nylon blend construction is soft and lightweight at just 8 ounces. Eyelet side panels and the 1/2-zip design add even more breathability and ventilation for warm-weather jaunts, while flat lock seams and raglan sleeves prevent chaffing. With UPF 50+ sun protection, the Zip-T also keeps your skin safe from harmful rays. Sporting a zippered chest pocket in several camo or solid color options, it can carry you through an entire season with minimal washings.

My Thoughts on the KUIU Merino 145 Zip-T

I've donned the Zip-T on a few unseasonably hot days, and it kept me comfortably cool in direct sunlight. It's only available in men's sizes, but KUIU is one of few hunting brands that offers size small through 3XL. Some reviewers recommend sizing up, but the men's small provided plenty of room on my frame, even with a tank underneath.

This lightweight base layer is available in a Merino 145 Zip-T Hoodie version and corresponding Merino 145 Zip-Off Bottom. KUIU's merino line also includes gloves, socks, neck gaiters, beanies, and balaclavas.
