Game Day Recipe: Venison Sausage Pizza Ring

Crescent rolls, browned venison sausage and cheese? Yum!

Looking for a recipe that will have the pickiest eater's mouth-watering? Imagine this: fresh Italian venison sausage, perfectly seasoned and browned in the skillet, wrapped in a puffy crescent roll, with savory cheeses oozing out. No one can say no to a pizza-themed recipe, and especially one wrapped in a crescent roll. It's a meal that just about anyone can get behind and a fresh take on pizza night. In just under 30 minutes, you will have a tasty meal that works for dinner or an appetizer.

While preheating your oven, brown your ground sausage on the stove top, draining any excess liquid. You can use two cans of crescent rolls for a quick and easy dough, or you can make your own if you have a favorite homemade recipe. Shape the dough into a ring with five inches in the center. Fill your triangles with meat and cheese and bake in the oven. Twenty minutes later, give or take a few, depending on your oven, and you're ready to eat!

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound Italian venison sausage
  • 2 cans refrigerated crescent rolls
  • ½ cup ricotta
  • 2 tablespoons Parmesan cheese
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon oregano
  • 1.5 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 jar marinara sauce, warmed, for serving
  • chopped parsley to garnish

Recipe Directions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 375 degrees.
  2. In a large skillet over medium-high heat, brown the ground Italian sausage until it's no longer pink. Drain if needed, then set aside to cool.
  3. Unroll both cans of pizza dough, separating them into 8 rectangles. Arrange rectangles into a ring shape on an untreated cookie sheet, overlapping them slightly. The center should be 5 inches big.
  4. In a small bowl, combine ricotta cheese, Parmesan cheese, garlic powder, and oregano. Mix together, then spoon onto the dough between the edge and the center.
  5. Add cooked Italian sausage over top of the ricotta mixture
  6. Top with shredded mozzarella.
  7. Gently pull each triangle over the toppings and press them into the outer crust. Repeat with the remaining triangles.
  8. Bake in the oven for 18-21 minutes or until golden brown. Serve with warmed marinara.
