Back in 2022, human remains were discovered on a California beach. The remains were found in June on Salem Creek beach by a family that was hunting for seashells. They found so much more. Now, the DNA Doe Project (DDP) has announced that they have discovered the identity of the human remains.

The Guardian shared details surrounding this important discovery. According to the outlet, "DNA testing confirmed the bones found on Salmon Creek beach belonged to Walter Karl Kinney, a man last seen in 1999." This was surprising news since the former banker had disappeared in 1999, and no one knew what had happened to him.
The DDP shared that while the family on the beach was looking for seashells, they stumbled across the human remains. The bone that they found "contained surgical hardware." "A pathology exam suggested it was a tibia." However, with no additional bones found on the California beach, the team was unable to determine an identity for the human remains.
From there, the sheriff's office brought the bones to the DDP, who got to work. "They developed a DNA profile and uploaded it to GEDmatch, a public genealogy database, in January 2026." Using the database, the team was able to identify a family, which eventually led to Kinney. However, the true breakthrough came when they stumbled across an article from 1999. The article claimed that "human remains had washed ashore in 1999, just a couple of miles south in Bodega Bay."
Shortly after the massive discovery, the team was able to confirm that the partial human remains found on the California beach belonged to Walter Karl Kinney. They used X-ray records to confirm the ID. Despite his remains being found and unidentified twice, the DDP finally got the answers this family so desperately needed. Now, Mr. Kinney is no longer a John Doe.
