How to Age a Turkey By Its Spurs

Here are some quick tips on how to age a wild turkey by looking at its spurs.

Wouldn't it be nice to know what age bracket that turkey falls into after you finish a spring turkey hunt. Think of how it will enrich your hunting story and memory if you know just a little more about your quarry.

The professionals at Cabela's fortunately decided to take a minute to show how easy it is to determine the general age of that old gobbler by looking at spur length.

There you have it, a quick spur measurement and you can guess the age of that three-year-old bird.

Aging a bird can play an important role in understanding your turkey hunting area. By knowing the bird's general age you will know if on average you are bagging more mature birds or more junior toms; which will help you understand the general health of the population.

Ideally you are taking the older toms that are near the end of their life-cycle and leaving the more junior guys to breed with the hens, as they have a few more years to live.

All turkey hunters should take a minute to age their bird after the initial excitement of the harvest and have a better understanding of the game we all love to hunt.
