A new deer-flavored whiskey from Tamworth Distillery is here just in time for hunting season.
Across the United States, it seems like everyone's mind is centered around deer hunting once the fall season starts. And by everyone, we mean whiskey distillers, too.
To coincide with this year's hunting season, New Hampshire-based Tamworth Distilling and Mercantile has come up with a take on craft liquor that we've never seen before, let alone thought of.
"The Deerslayer" is a 99-proof, venison-flavored whiskey "distilled with smoked red deer venison, cranberries, juniper berries, porcini mushrooms and green peppercorns." You can find it online at the Tamworth website.
The idea was concocted by Tamworth and Pennsylvania's Quaker City Merchantile owner Steven Grasse. There's even a scheduled scavenger hunt with a $300 prize happening in mid-November at the distillery as a way to celebrate the new release.

After fermenting overnight to accentuate the meat's delectable gaminess, it is then slow-smoked over a mix of seasoned branches from New Hampshire's boreal forests. A 3-year old white wheat whiskey serves as a lighter-bodied whiskey backbone, allowing the truly unique flavoring to shine through after its final distillation in our rotary evaporator. Savory and smoky notes characterize this one-of-a-kind spirit, with a subtle spice on the palate and a lingering finish.
The Tamworth distillery might be a familiar name if you recall their other oddball craft liquors from the recent past, including another American whiskey made with beaver castoreum, or their use of maple syrup tapped from trees found in a graveyard as flavoring for another recipe. They also have one in the works that's referred to as a "corpse flower durian brandy."
These liquors are obviously catered for the brave portion of the North American whiskey fans. Venison whiskey is one we can get behind, but those others? We're aren't so sure...
But if you're looking for a hunting-themed libation to bring to deer camp and toast with after a successful whitetail harvest, then Deerslayer Whiskey might be it.
