Finding the Perfect Slug Gun Setup for This Season

What's a good shotgun for deer hunting?

When it comes to building the perfect slug gun for deer hunters, it's easy to get intimated by the array of options. A lot of people don't ever try hunting deer with a shotgun, so they don't know where to start.

Thankfully, we've put together a guide to forging the right deer hunting shotgun for anyone.

What will you be hunting with this year?

The Weekend Warrior

The Remington 870 has probably killed more deer than almost any other slug gun. They're cost-effective, reliable and easy to customize. In fact, my trusty 20-gauge slug gun and some sabot slugs helped me tag my first handful of deer. With a rifled barrel and scope mounted, you'll be ready for deer season. It's important to note this gun isn't the most accurate option when weighing all of the options. However, it's an all-around solid choice.

This is a fantastic option for anyone, but for those who are trying to limit spending on a gun, the Remington 870 is perfect.

Ol' Reliable

This is my current slug gun and it's one of my favorites. Its a single-shot with a heavy-duty, rifled barrel. I use Hornady slugs with this gun and they shoot dead on and 100 yards. The scope mount can sometimes seem too shallow depending on the scope you put on it. I've found this gun to be very reliable and accurate over the years, though.

It's a little on the heavy side, but if you're still hunting, that shouldn't be too much of an issue. However, if spot and stalk is your style, it could get a little heavy carrying it all day. At the end of the day, I plan to use this slug gun for many more hunting seasons.

Long-Distance Accuracy

This bolt-action slug gun is revered as one of the most accurate long-distance deer hunting shotguns. The build fosters for long-range accuracy and consistency. Although I haven't shot this particular model, I've heard nothing but good things. If I were to purchase a new slug gun, this would be my top choice.

The gun comes with Savage's AccuTrigger, which I've come to love in some of my other Savage firearms. The trigger technology would certainly increase accuracy when scoping a buck this fall.

Some other great options to explore are the Winchester 1300 and  Browning BPS Rifled Deer Hunter.

Good luck this season!
