One of Apple's self-driving cars was involved in a collision last month.
CNBC says that according to a California Department of Motor Vehicles report, the August 24 incident occurred on the Lawrence Expressway in Sunnyvale, Calif., where a Nissan Leaf running 15 miles per hour rear-ended the Apple self-driving vehicle, a modified Lexus RX450h, as it was merging onto a highway at less than 5 miles per hour.
No word from an Apple spokesman on the incident, other than a report being filed.
"An Apple test vehicle in autonomous mode was rear-ended while preparing to merge onto Lawrence Expressway South from Kifer Road," reads the incident description. "The Apple test vehicle was traveling less than 1mph waiting for a safe gap to complete the merge when a 2016 Nissan Leaf contacted the Apple test vehicle at approximately 15 mph."
At the moment, Apple is remaining very mum on its self-driving plans, other than filings confirming 5,000 employees have been assigned to a circuit board and proprietary autonomous chip project with a permit acquired to test self-driving vehicles in California last year.
