A Surprise Closure At EPCOT Extends To A Third Day And Guests Want Answers

When visiting Disney World, you should expect some kind of closure. Given the sheer size of the parks and the number of rides within them, it is normal for everything to need occasional maintenance. However, when something closes for routine maintenance, there is typically an announcement made. Not to mention a schedule indicating when the attraction will reopen. Perhaps that is why guests were so disheartened to learn of the surprise closure at Disney's EPCOT. Now, the park is on day three of this closure and offering no explanation, leaving guests demanding answers.

Perhaps the most memorable sight in EPCOT is when you first enter the park. While the Magic Kingdom has Cinderella's castle, EPCOT has its own sphere. Although it is an impressive sight all on its own, the revered sphere is known for more than just a great photo op. It also has a ride inside. That ride is Spaceship Earth, and according to Disney Fanatic, "it has been a cornerstone of the EPCOT experience for over four decades."

The ride consists of "slow-moving omnimover vehicles that travel through a detailed history of human communication." It takes guests "from ancient cave paintings through the invention of the printing press, to the rise of the internet." However, for the last three days, there has been a surprise closure of this ride. According to the outlet, the ride first showed signs of trouble on March 20. After which, it finally closed on the morning of March 21. However, no official announcement of closure was made.

Even more strange is that the My Disney Experience App shows no surprise closure. Instead, it shows the ride as operating during normal hours. Disney Fanatic took that clue to mean that this was indeed an unplanned closure. Cast members have been standing guard at the front of the line queue and have been directing park guests away from the ride. When questioned about when the ride will reopen, they simply say to continue monitoring the app.

Rumors Are Circulating

Furthermore, guests are skeptical about the surprise closure at EPCOT because not only the ride has been closed. Instead, "The entire Project Tomorrow post-show area, the interactive space guests typically walk through after completing the ride, has been roped off independently." That is something that Disney typically only does when something serious has occurred. With Disney's lack of comment on the matter, it has allowed park guests to speculate for themselves. Unconfirmed rumors suggest that a pipe burst in one of the buildings, and water damage may have affected the building and parts of the ride

The Silver Lining

Despite not addressing the rumors or providing any real information as to why the ride has closed, Disney cast members are handling the situation in a fantastic way. Not only are they greeting questioning guests with a smile, but they are also doing something far more magical. Disney cast members are standing outside of the line queue and are re-enacting parts of the ride, thus ensuring that park guests are still getting the Spaceship Earth experience.

One user shared a clip of it on X, stating, "Reason #21846 why I love cast members."
