An apartment complex is going to get to the bottom of who keeps leaving dog poop on their property. They even resulted to DNA testing to try to track down the culprits.
Hudson Harbor in Edgewater requires owners to put their genetic data on file with management. This costs $200 and requires swabbing their dogs. That's so management can figure out if their dogs are leaving dog poop on the property. Management is sampling the feces and sending it to a a lab called PooPrints.
If found guilty, they'll charge owners more than $250 for the poop.
"You can't always pick it up, so I'm a little worried. Sometimes we're outside in the dark in a non-lit area, and I can't always find [the feces]," said Angelina Budija, resident. "They're the poop police. Now I have to be even more cautious. I think it's a little over the top."
Property manager Christina Ortiz believes it is a necessary measure.
Dog Poop Test
"I think it holds our residents responsible, and it's been working out for us," Ortiz told The New York Post. "I guess, yes, I'm kind of a detective of sorts." "Never in my wildest dreams did I think this would be a thing. We're really in the future."
Other residents think it's a good idea.
"I say if you left your poop out there, you've been tested - they're coming for you now," Eliana Marquez said. "If it takes a lab to get it done, good. A lot of people are leaving their poop out here. It's the worst, especially when it's so simple to pick it up. It gets stuck in your shoes. Pick up your poop!"
Tony Spinella also thinks it's great.
"I think it's great. I'm sure it's not cheap to send to a lab for DNA testing, which shows that they're serious about it," said Spinella. "We get certain people — and you can tell by the poop — it's repeat offenders. You step in it, it's horrible."
