Pride 2022: Go-To Guide for Parades, Festivals & More Around The U.S.

The month of June is widely celebrated as LGBTQIA2S+ Pride Month in the United States — a collective call back to the Stonewall riots of June 28 to July 3, 1969. The riots began as a stand against police brutality and surveillance of the queer community after a raid on a known Gay Bar in New York City, The Stonewall Inn. Led by Black and Latinx Trans Women Sylvia Rivera and Marsha P. Johnson, the riots have since been credited as the start of the LGBTQ+ Rights movement on-going today. Starting the very next year on the riots' one-year anniversary, the first pride parade set off from the Stonewall Inn as a form of protest and solidarity; thus, Pride was born. In the years since, June has evolved into a time where festivals, marches, and parties celebrating and defending queer love, identity and family can be found almost anywhere in the U.S.

2022 is seeing a significant number of legal and political attacks on Trans, Queer and gender non-conforming individuals, making celebrating Pride this year all the more important. If you've never been to Pride, or aren't a local wherever you find yourself this summer (hey, nomads!), it can be overwhelming to try and find an event that feels the most comfortable for you. Sound familiar? Don't worry buckaroo, I've done the legwork of rounding up most of the Pride events happening in the country from June through September 2022. Think of me as your super-plugged-in queer bestie *insert hair flip emoji*. While I've almost certainly missed a few (because getting them all would be close to impossible), I hope this serves as a great place for you to start your exploration.

To take it one step further, this list is categorized by event type, state and month. Some are family friendly, some are free to the public, and all of them are guaranteed to be a good time. Whether you yourself are a little fruity (the best of us are, #sorrynotsorry), or you just wanna show your support for the LGBTQIA+ community this summer, keep reading for the first ever edition of Pride Open Roads: a Wide Open Roads guide to Pride around the country.

PrideFests and Parades

PrideFests and Parades/Marches are generally what comes to mind when people think of Pride. Gay Pride Parades have been iconic since the very first one in 1970, and there doesn't seem to be any end in sight. These events are generally free and open to the public. They are largely family friendly and include things like vendor booths, food trucks, live music, LGBTQIA+ speakers and rallies, games, healthcare services like STI/HIV/AIDS testing and COVID-19 Vaccinations, and of course, parades.

Drag Shows/Brunches and burlesque performances are, in my opinion, synonymous with Pride. Of course, if you play your cards right, you can indulge in the wonder year round, but Pride is a great place to dip your toes in. Attendees are generally welcomed to dress up or down to their comfort and encouraged to remain respectful of performers and the safe space for gender fluidity and expression that is innate to Drag and Burlesque performances. Prom brings up mixed feelings for a lot of folks. Queer folks are no exception. Queer proms have grown in popularity over the past few years, and frankly, I love it. They give LGBTQIA2S+ adults the freedom to attend prom the way their younger selves would have never dared - from their date choice to their gender identity and everything in between. There are several family friendly and youth centered events geared at cultivating the safe space for self expression that many queer adults find they wished they'd had as children.

Queer Prom - West Hartford, CT (June 18): This is an event geared towards LGBTQ+ high schoolers. The event will be held from 6-9 p.m. Local time at the West Hartford Town Hall. There will be a live DJ, Drag Performances, pizza and snacks. Suggested donation for entry is $20.

Taking place at the Hanarry Swim and Racket Club in Lilburn, inclusive meal and alcohol tickets are available on the eventbrite page and there will also be non-alcoholic beverages available.

Queer As In... Pride Dance Party - Portland, ME (June 18): Beginning at 8 p.m. local time and ragin' until 1 a.m., Queer As In... is a benefit prom for Portland Outright, a local LGBTQ rights and advocacy organization. Virtual Pride Events

Virtual pride events bring members of our community together no matter how far. They are also actively increasing access to pride for disabled and chronically ill individuals who have historically been left out of pride and pride celebrations.

Navajo Nation Loud & Proud Virtual Roundtable (June 21): Event runs from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. local time. There are no tickets; programming is available for streaming on the Navajo Nation Pride Facebook and YouTube pages.

Ticket holders will be able to have questions answered by panelists and speakers. Tickets are available for free via event brite, though organizers ask that you consider a donation of $5 or more to support the work. The event will also be live streamed on YouTube if you'd rather just observe.

Queens in the Kitchen (June 21 and June 28): Live cooking class held each Tuesday of Pride Month. Each session is 15 minutes long, and grocery lists can be found on the Capital City Pride (Des Moines, IA) facebook page prior to the demo for those who'd like to cook along.

As we finish off our list, and If you've made it this far, you'll notice that some notable party destinations are missing from the list. That's because some areas celebrate Pride during LGBTQIA+ History Month which happens in October. That list includes Las Vegas, Nevada and Atlanta, Georgia, most notably. If you find yourself in either city in October, take a look at their respective pride websites and see if there's an event of interest near you!

Pride is a beautiful and wonderful way to celebrate not only the history and progress of the LGBTQIA2S+ community, but the breadth and brilliance of our futures. While it should, in my opinion, be a year-round process of celebration and acknowledgement, taking over the entire summer is a great start.

I hope this guide finds you and serves you well, friend. Stay safe, party responsibly and have a happy, happy Pride.
