2017 Mercedes-Benz G 65 AMG Recalled Because It's Too Fast (in Reverse)

What's wrong with a Mercedes that's TOO fast?

A software defect in a select number of 2017 Mercedes-Benz G 65 AMG SUVs has led to a bizarre problem that must be corrected with a recall. If you're traveling too fast in reverse and turn the wheel abruptly, that in the stunt world is known as a J-turn. On a top-heavy, luxury off-roader like the G 65, however, that can lead to a rollover.

The problem is that the engine controller does not limit the speeds when the G 65 is in reverse, and to remedy the issue, Mercedes will update the engine computer to put a proper speed limiter in place to keep speeds under 16 mph. Less than two dozen vehicles are affected by the recall, and they were built between September 6, 2016 and October 10, 2016.

Not that the G-Class is a common SUV to begin with, but the top-of-the-line G 65 is even more rare, which explains why just 20 units are being recalled.

The G 65, of course, stands out with its 6.5-liter twin-turbo V-12 engine cranking out 621 horsepower and 738 lb-ft of torque. That's enough to rocket this three-ton SUV from 0-60 in just 5.3 seconds!
