72-Year-Old Hospitalized After Being Attacked By Geese

A 72-year-old woman has landed in the hospital after being attacked by geese. Although not outwardly as scary as a bear or wolves, geese can be downright temperamental. There's been more than one story of the birds chasing or even stalking people.

In this case, a gaggle of geese attacked a woman at a local park in Texas. The woman suffered injuries serious enough to put her in the hospital. Let's take a look at exactly what happened. Lydia West was feeding the birds at City Lake Park in Royse City. However, on December 1, the birds bit the hand that feeds.

Speaking with WFAA, her son, David, said that the geese attacked and injured his mother. According to David, Lydia had regularly fed ducks and geese at the park. But the animals caused her to fall and suffer several injuries at the beginning of the month.

"She was feeding the little ducks, and large geese came up to her and started attacking the food, and she fell hard," David told WFAA. "And she was trapped on the ground, unable to move."

According to David, a couple of bystanders saw Lydia get injured. They braved the onslaught of birds and fought off the geese. They then called emergency services. First responders transported her to a trauma center where they treated her for a fractured pelvis and internal bleeding.

"She's a very small stature. She has other health concerns as well," David told WFAA, adding: "She has a long road of physical therapy and learning how to be able to walk."

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for City Lake Park told WFAA said they're considering adding signs at the park about the wildlife.

"It was a shock that the geese could even become that territorial and could hurt somebody," David said.

David hopes their story can warn others.

"Our main concern is being able to get a warning out there to the public, especially the senior community," David told WFAA.
