16-Pound, 9-Ounce Walleye Breaks North Dakota Record

The previous record didn't last even a year.

Tom Volk was fishing the Heart River yesterday near Mandan, North Dakota, when he hooked into the fish of a lifetime.

The Lincoln native was surely hoping to reel in a giant, but definitely wasn't expecting to square up with a 32-1/2-inch walleye.

The North Dakota Game and Fish Department confirmed Volk's walleye bested North Dakota's largest ever caught by less than a pound, setting a new state record.

While the previous record was set less than a year ago, the record before it had remained untouched for nearly 60 years.

The most recent record, caught by Neal Leier on the Missouri River, weighed 15 pounds, 13 ounces. Volk's walleye weighed 16 pounds, 9 ounces.

Congrats to Volk on one heck of a catch!
