A woman found herself in quite a predicament after getting stuck up to her shoulders in a hole. She fell into the hidden hole near her home.
"What a stupid situation to find yourself in," Christine Keilback told Canada's CBC News. She explained that she had went to the movies and came home. That's when she tripped in and fell into the hole. Fortunately, her friends, Lynda and Jeff Regan, had been dropping her off. They thought she tripped at first.
"It just happened very quickly," Keilback said.
"They were so professional and they were so reassuring and kind, and I felt immediately like everything was under control," Keilback said. However, things could have been deadly. Firefighters noted a metal pipe near the hole.
Stuck in a Hole
"There was also an old pipe in front of me, about the level of my abdomen, so I could have hit that on the way down," Keilback told CBC News. Fortunately, she suffered no injuries. "If I had hurt my ankle or hurt my leg or something happened, I'm sure it would have been a little more shocking than what it was."
The hole turned out to be a catch basin and lead.
"We... found that it was actually a previously removed catch basin and lead," Winnipeg city spokeswoman Lisa Marquardson said. "Both locations have been secured and made safe. We are working to make immediate repairs to the area. We will investigate this issue further so that we can take steps to prevent this from happening again."
"If you see a manhole cover missing, if you see a drain in the street that's broken and needs repair or replacement, please send that information into 311 so we can get our crews out there," Winnipeg Mayor Scott Gillingham told the Free Press. "I know our staff inspected the area around to make sure that there (were) no other maintenance issues."
