Water Snake Attempts to Steal a Trout From Pair of Anglers

When a northern water snake grabbed their trout, this couple could only sit back and watch.

The northern water snake is a common, non-venomous predator in many states where fishermen enjoy lakes and ponds. It is not uncommon for anglers to see these serpents sunning themselves on rocks or slithering along with the current. One of the states this species calls home is the Hawkeye State of Iowa.

When a couple of fishermen were testing the waters in the northeastern part of Iowa, they were obviously doing something right. It wasn't too long before a snake took liking to their offering. While the anglers simply wanted to land their catch, the snake had other plans. What happens next is a short back-and-forth tug of war over the trout.

They ended up capturing video of the whole thing to prove it. Because a fish tale like this would hard to believe otherwise. Snake haters be warned, this one may make you a little leery on your next fishing trip.

This isn't the first time we've seen a water snake try to take somebody else's catch, but it may have been for Jen Wiley and Nick Berg. According to the Iowa DNR, both the snake and the trout got away to fight another day. Although we imagine the snake was a little ticked at having missed out on a tasty meal. This is why you always carry a camera while fishing. Not just for the big catches, but for any other strange encounters you may have along the way.

We'd like to give a big thanks to these two for sharing their great adventure! Here's to hoping the next shore lunch they hook will belong to them and not some marauding snake.
