This iconic destination has been called the "Hawai of Europe." It is known for breathtaking views, stunning landscapes, and incredible hiking. While many tourists have flocked here for vacation in the past, that may be about to change. The change has nothing to do with the locations' beauty. Instead, it has to do with the fact that tourists are now being slapped with new fees for visiting.

When it comes to popular vacation destinations, the island of Madeira takes one of the top spots. With volcanic cliffs, waterfalls, and incredible hiking trails, it is an outdoor-lover's paradise. However, there is one thing about this magical destination that people are not living this year: the new fees. According to the NY Post, locals of this island were complaining about the effects of overtourism. With their island feeling overcrowded and suffering from environmental damage from certain tourists, they demanded a change.
It appears that authorities listened to the locals. Now, new tourist fees have been imposed on all non-residents who want to enjoy some of the most popular hiking trails. Now you may be thinking, "Okay, so just don't go hiking?" However, like I told you, this island is an outdoor-lover's paradise. Additionally, the stunning hiking trails are one of the things Madeira is most known for. You do not come to this vacation destination and avoid hiking.
Surprisngly, Tourists Are Not Too Mad About It
The outlet shares that anyone who wishes to hike on one of the trails must "book a 30-minute time slot in advance through the SIMplifica platform." Additionally, if you are a non-resident, you will need to pay around $5.30 for the use of the standard trails. Residents of Madeira do not need to pay the tourist fees, but they still need to register a time slot ahead of time. Surprisingly, not many tourists are angered about these new tourist fees.
Instead, many shared their understanding, commenting on how this island used to fly under the radar and is now booming with popularity. Also, they agreed that being overcrowded can steal the magic away from a destination. However, some question if these new tourist fees are really aimed at lessening the crowds or if they are just trying to get more money out of tourists.
