Montana Man Gets $11,000 Fine for Poaching Well-Known Urban Buck

Man shot buck from a vehicle within city limits.

Last September, we first told you about a big urban mule deer buck that was poached within the city limits and left dead on the streets of Butte, Montana. Officials were looking to the public for leads.

It seems authorities caught the man responsible and now he's paying a hefty fine for the act. Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks sent out a news release reporting 20-year-old Kyler Olsen has lost his hunting privileges for five years and will have to pay an $11,695 fine. $8,000 of that goes to trophy restitution.

Olsen pleaded guilty to shooting with artificial lights, shooting from a vehicle, within the city limits and abandoning the kill. FWP didn't give too many details of the investigation, but the news release states the investigation was aided by tracing of the bullet in the buck and by information from the public.

As is too often the case it seems, this apparently wasn't Olsen's only wildlife crime. The release also states he pled guilty to two additional charges of poaching another deer. Those charges included unlawful possession and over the limit.

The buck in Butte however, gained a little bit of notoriety in the wake of the incident. The buck was a well-known urban animal to the residents of Butte.
