Kelly Clarkson meet Kelly Sharkson. The singer hilariously learned that a shark was named after her in the ocean.
Welcoming former preschool teacher Andrea Clulow and her husband, Darrell Clulow to The Kelly Clarkson Show, Clarkson was surprised by the gesture. The Clulows wrote a new children's book, Finn & Friends , and started an organization of the same name. It's all done to teach kids about sharks.
"There's no denying sharks can be intimidating creatures, but they're also beautiful and a central part of our oceans," Clarkson began the segment.
Shark Is Named After Singer Kelly Clarkson
"I love sharks, and we had the opportunity last summer to go on a research expedition, and the first shark that we got to ... help tag, we adopted, and her name is Kelly Sharkson," she said.
Clarkson was excited by the prospect. Andrea is hopeful that she can teach kids that sharks aren't monsters.
"I wrote a story about this shark and his ocean friends, and hopefully kids will read this story and relate to these animals and see them through empathy and not fear," she said of Finn & Friends.
"We wanted them to be inside the story, so we've made it interactive," Darrell said. So they made the book interactive, allowing kids to do a word search or draw their favorite sea animals.
"When a kid sits down, and they draw something that they love, they're forming a connection," he also said. "They're not just being lectured about conservation."
He continued, "When a child finishes this book and feels inspired to get out and to explore, care about the ocean, imagines themselves maybe as a future marine biologist, or just sees sharks in a different way, that's our goal."
