When venturing out into the ocean, you accept the risk of coming into contact with its many inhabitants. Its inhabitants range from schools of fish to sea turtles to great white sharks. Sometimes, the creatures you stumble upon are even larger. This incredible video captures the moment that a massive whale surprises an unsuspecting paddleboarder.
Awesome Video Captures Moment Whale Surprises Paddleboarder
Imagine you are just enjoying a nice paddleboarding session in the ocean when the unexpected happens. You feel a small current, only to look over and see a massive shadow beneath you.
AZ Animals shared that the massive whale that snuck up on the paddleboarder was a Southern Right Whale. Additionally, the outlet shared that "Southern Right Whales are slow-moving baleen whales that migrate between Antarctic feeding grounds and warmer coastal breeding areas in South America, Africa, and Australia."
Although they are gentle giants, experts advise against getting too close for two reasons. First, these creatures are massive and have immense power. Therefore, they could inflict serious damage without meaning to. Second, they are protected by laws in many regions, so you don't want to encroach on their space. However, it would appear that this paddleboarder did not have a choice.
The Video
The video begins with the paddleboarder gently floating in the ocean as the massive whale approaches from behind. As it slowly gets closer, the Southern Right Whale gently nudges the paddleboard with its fin.
The individual on the paddleboard remained seated throughout the experience and appeared to be calm. While the aerial footage shows what appears to be a gentle greeting, I am sure it was awe-inspiring and slightly terrifying up close.
After the gentle nudge, the whale turns on its side and continues to hover near the paddleboarder. Next, it swims underneath the board, showing how its massive size dwarfs the vessel and the individual riding it. After indulging its curiosity a bit longer, the whale appears to swim off. However, it actually went out and brought back a friend.
Now, two Southern Right Whales are swimming alongside the paddleboarder. They merely swim by and show their interest in this paddleboarder. This has to be some of the most epic wildlife footage I have ever seen. I cannot imagine how incredible it was to witness in person.
