How to Get Started Mearns Quail Hunting

Arizona offers hunters some fantastic opportunities to pursue a number of different species. Here's what you need to know about Mearns Quail hunting.

While Arizona has a well deserved reputation for outstanding pronghorn, elk, mule deer, and Coues deer hunting, those are far from the only species that may be hunted in the state. Marcus Hockett (Randy Newberg's camera guy and field producer from Fresh Tracks) just wrapped up an extended trip down to Arizona where he enjoyed some great Mearns Quail hunting after tagging a nice Coues deer buck.

Mearns Quail live in Mexico, Arizona, New Mexico, and west Texas, so you'll need to head down to the southwest if you want to hunt them. Fortunately, Arizona has a tremendous amount of public land with lots of suitable quail habitat.

In fact, there's so much public land down there that it's possible to find some really good quail hunting without many other hunters around.

Here's one other thing to keep in mind about Mearns Quail hunting in Arizona: the season runs from November through February. So, you could be out enjoying some fantastic upland bird hunting down there instead of freezing your tail off next winter.
