How to Choose the Best Hunting Bows for Girls

If you're in the market for a new bow for a little lady in your life, here's what to look for.

The world of bowhunting is a fantastic one, and sharing the love for it with a young woman can be extremely beneficial.

Here are some of the things you'll want to keep in mind as you shop for, consider, and eventually purchase a first bow for a girl.

Keep It Compact

If your daughter or granddaughter is on the petite side, a long bow might be just as tall as she is. Look for a shorter youth bow or one with an appropriate axle-to-axle length for your pint-sized shooter.

Focus on Lightweight Bows

What might feel like a rig in the average weight range for you and me could feel like lifting a boulder to a tiny teen who's never drawn a bow before. Look for a lightweight bow and don't forget to account for the added ounces of accessories like a bow sight, stabilizer, and arrow rest. Bows with carbon risers will typically weigh in at less than aluminum options.

Make Sure It's Adjustable

Rather than reinvest in a new rig every time she springs up an inch or can handle another five pounds at full draw, choose a bow with adjustable draw length and adjustable draw weight.

Find One With a Smooth Draw & High Let-off

Archery takes some getting used to, and easing a girl into it with a bow that feels good to shoot will certainly help. One with 80% let-off and a solid back wall will be easier for a first-time female archer to shoot and get some practice under her belt. Some bow manufacturers offer models with adjustability for this factor too.

She won't need a bow with IBO speeds pushing 350 fps, so specs such as brace height aren't too important here.

Best Bow for Girls

For growing girls or young women who are new to the sport, an adjustable bow like the Diamond Archery Infinite Edge Pro is your best bet. With rotating modules and a single cam system, this smooth-shooting bow measures 31 inches at just 3.2 pounds with draw-weight settings from 5-70 pounds and 80% let-off.

It's important to point out that this isn't just a youth bow. It can accommodate shooters with shorter draw lengths down to 13 inches, but it can also adjust for adults up to 31 inches. The Infinite Edge Pro comes as a compound bow package available for left-handed or right-handed shooters equipped with a three-pin sight, stabilizer, whisker biscuit, quiver, peep sight, D-loop, and wrist strap for just $379.

A similar model from Diamond was my first compound bow and my first bowhunting rig, and it served me well for seven years as I grew stronger and gradually upped my draw weight.

Since it's likely not her forever bow (although it probably could be), there's no need to break the bank. Mission, Bowtech, and Bear Archery also offer some great bow kits at affordable price points with plenty of versatility for a blossoming bowhunter.
