Giant Blue Marlin Breaks Australian Record

An Exmouth charter fisherman tipped the scales to start the year, capturing a 1,089-pound blue marlin.

Peak Sportfishing Adventures' Eddy Lawler took Clay Hilbert out on his 36-foot boat, hoping to lead the way to success. However, neither of them expected the day to result in a record-breaking fish.

Hilbert brought in the fish with 60-kilogram (132-pound) line, and easily beat the previous record, which stood at 812 pounds.

Not only does this incredible catch set a high bar for anglers in 2018, but it also adds to Exmouth's reputation as a prime location for big-game fishing. Locals are hoping for a boom in tourism to come from the catch, as they anticipate anglers to make the trip to try their luck.

According to WA Today, officials believe the fish was close to 15 years old.
