Recently, a family suffered a terrifying flood that swept away their ranch. Sadly, Alicia and Jose Olvera passed away after a terrifying flood swept through Texas last July.
They were among several killed when the Guadalupe River rose.
"I never thought that I was going to lose my grandma like that," Krystal Torres says. "I always thought it was going to be from a sickness or just old age. My grandma loved spending time with her family, being at home and serving her husband."
When the flood hit the ranch, the whole family gathered to search for the two.
"It was sad seeing my aunts and uncles searching for their mother, but it was an honor being able to be there and know that we were all still united," Torres says.'
Bible Swept Away by Flood
Sadly, they later found their bodies washed away by the flood. But in a moment of faith, Torres said they recovered a family bible near her grandmother.
"We believe that my grandma took her bag with her, and inside her bag was the Bible, which later got washed away by the current," Torres says.
The family is still dealing with their grief in the aftermath of the flood.
"It's still a shock," Torres says. "Sometimes I still ask, 'Why my grandparents?'"
"We would always go out and visit the ranch and go to the lake and to the dam, and spend our time over there," says Torres. It's been hard, but the nice thing is that we get to keep her memory alive."
"We don't feel any guilt as a family that we never went to go visit her, or that we never did anything for her," she says. "If anything, we get to be in peace with the fact that we always celebrated her anytime we could. We always talked to her on the phone, and we get to stay with that."
