Elderly Couple Killed in Indiana After Tornado Strikes Home

An elderly couple has sadly died after a tornado outbreak in Illinois and Indiana. A tornado struck their home killing the two. On March 11, supercell thunderstorms spun off several tornadoes.

"One supercell was responsible for a family of tornadoes (at least 4) across Livingston and Kankakee counties in Illinois, and Newton, Jasper, and Starke counties in northwestern Indiana," the agency said.

In Newton County, a couple died during the storm. The Newton County Coroner's Office confirmed the deaths in a statement. "An elderly couple were found deceased after their home in the 8000 block of CR 600 W was struck and destroyed," the coroner's office said. "No names are being released at this time pending positive identification and notification of the next of kin."

Indiana Gov. Mike Braun said he and his wife were "praying for the families who lost loved ones and for every Hoosier impacted by the devastating tornadoes in Northwest Indiana."

"First responders, state and local officials, and the American Red Cross are on the ground providing immediate support," he added. "With severe weather continuing across Indiana, I urge all Hoosiers to stay alert, follow guidance from local officials, and take precautions to keep their families safe."

A tornado watch also extended to Wednesday for Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky and Ohio.

"The risks for tornadoes and severe weather shifts eastward today into the OH Valley/Mid-Atlantic and across the northern Gulf Coast," the NWS said in a Wednesday morning X post. "A few tornadoes will be possible across these areas, along with damaging wind gusts. A few storms producing large hail are also possible within the northern storms."

In Illinois, Kankakee Mayor Chris Curtis also warned about another storm system.

"There is a chance, based on projections, that this system could remain south of Aroma Park and could potentially result in 60mph winds and hail," he cautioned. "Please take appropriate precautions [and] potential shelter.
