Yes, You Should Be Feeding Your Dogs Eggs

Many pet parents use eggs as a topper on their dog's meals! Our readers are also chicken keepers and one the best ways to use all those eggs is to feed your family, neighbors but also your dogs. So, we are happy to say the answer is yes! All things in moderation though! An egg a few times a week is a perfect cadence rather than two or three a day.

Raw, scrambled, and boiled all work fine. If you are feeding raw eggs to your pup, you must be mindful of both salmonella and biotin deficiency. Biotin deficiency is the result of feeding raw egg whites over a long period of time. They contain an enzyme that ties up biotin and prevents absorption of biotin into the body. Biotin is a B complex vitamin that supports healthy skin, digestion, metabolism, and cells.

Are eggs safe for dogs?

The American Kennel Club tells us,

"Eggs are high in protein and contain many essential amino acids and fatty acids. When boiled or cooked, they make excellent treats or dietary supplements for dogs. Not only are eggs a healthy and nutritious snack for dogs, but they can also help settle upset stomachs. Talk to your veterinarian about how many eggs to feed your dog per day. While eggs are generally safe for most dogs, overfeeding your dog can result in obesity and other health problems."

So not only are eggs safe for dogs, they are a topper or snack that's chock full of protein and those fatty acids are a big bonus. Your dog will have a beautiful coat as a result!

Let's break down the nutrients!

Did you know that eggs are one of the most complete sources of amino acids, the building blocks of protein?

Eggs are a good source of:

  • Vitamin A
  • Riboflavin
  • Folate
  • Vitamin B12

What else can dogs eat as a topper?

Many dog owners enjoy feeding their dogs veggies and fruits as a topper.  These are a few of the approved options:

  1. Pureed fruits and veggies -puree them! Sweet potatoes and carrots are a great topper
  2. Bone Broths - check out our post!
  3. Canned pumpkin or yogurt

Supplements for dogs may include food fortifiers and vitamin-mineral mixes. One option is goat's milk and the benefits are endless... including probiotics and concentrated vitamins.

Dog food, fed day after day, can be boring for your pooch! There are so many health benefits of eggs and egg yolks. Feeding eggs is a great source of protein for your four-legged best friends! Watch for any digestive upset of course and don't feed eggs if you think it's making your dog's stomach upset.
