Cruise Ship Passenger Reportedly Jumped To Their Death While At Port

A cruise ship passenger has tragically passed away after jumping to their death from the boat while at port. The cruise ship was in Italy when the passenger plunged to the dock below.

"It is with deep sadness that we confirm the death of a guest of German nationality happened on last Friday 6 February at the port of Civitavecchia," Costa Cruises said in a statement. "According to an initial reconstruction of the events, the guest is believed to have voluntarily jumped onto the quay while the ship was docked for her regular operations."

Speaking to local outlets RomaToday and TRC Gironale, the cruise ship company also added that "the captain of the Costa Smeralda and the company are fully cooperating with the authorities and offering all possible support to the guest's family. Costa Cruises and the entire crew of the Costa Smeralda express their sincerest and heartfelt condolences to the family in this time of great sorrow."

Cruise Ship Passenger Dies

Following the tragedy, the cruise ship continued with its voyage, leaving port. The ship was on a seven-day Western Mediterranean tour when the tragedy happened. It had departed from Siciliy on February 5 with stops at Marseille, France; Barcelona, Spain, and Tunis, Tunisia.

The fateful plunge happened last Friday when the cruise ship was docked at Pier 12.

The statement continued, "At the same time," it was specified, "the competent authorities were promptly informed and are conducting the necessary investigations to ascertain the exact circumstances of the event. The captain of the Costa Smeralda and the company are fully cooperating with the authorities and offering all possible support to the guest's family. Costa Cruises and the entire crew of the Costa Smeralda express their sincerest and heartfelt condolences to the family in this time of great grief. Costa informs that, once the competent authorities have completed the onboard investigations, the ship has departed. The authorities have not deemed it necessary to carry out further investigations on board."
