Airline Adding Bunk Beds For Economy Travel: Would You Try Them?

We have all been there, halfway through an impossibly long flight, and we get that itch. That itch to stand up and stretch our legs. Some people are brave enough to walk up and down the aisles. Others just recline the seat as far as it will go and stretch out as much as possible. All the while, everyone is wishing they could have afforded the full loungers in first class. Well, now you might not need a first-class ticket to lie down on a flight. One airline is adding bunk beds to its economy travel section, and people are intrigued.

The NY Post shared that Air New Zealand is stepping up its game when it comes to in-flight comfort. The airline plans to add triple-tier bunk beds for economy travel. This would allow guests to fully stretch out while on their flight. If the thought of climbing a triple-tier ladder to get to your bed doesn't sound safe, the airline thought of that as well.

They are also providing travelers with special socks — I am assuming they have some sort of grip to make it safer to climb up and down. To begin, the outlet shares that "the airline will soon open bookings for four-hour stints in the Skynest sleep pods." Many are excited as this is the "first lie-flat beds for budget air travelers." As previously stated, typically, if you want that type of luxury, you need to pay top dollar.

What You Can Expect

The NY Post shared that "the planes will service the Auckland to New York route." That route is "one of the world's longest commercial flights and leaves economy passengers sitting upright for a marathon 16 to 18 hours." The thought process behind the airline offering these bunk beds is that passengers can get some reprieve from that discomfort.

The curtain bunk beds will be available starting in November to all economy and premium economy passengers. Those who are interested can pre-book their four-hour spot in one of the bunk beds. The price of a four-hour snooze in the bunk bed is around 495 New Zealand dollars, or $291. However, before jumping on the bed, there are some things you should know.

In order to keep things clean and respectable, the airline implemented some rules surrounding their bunk beds. There is no eating, bedsharing, or strong perfumes allowed in or near the bunk beds. The thought process there is that the setup of these bunk beds puts passengers in close proximity to one another, so everyone wants to be respectful and maintain etiquette.

Additionally, children are not permitted in the bunk beds. The airline ensures that cleanliness is of the utmost priority. Therefore, "pillows, blankets, and sheets supplied are all refreshed between four-hour naps." So, would you fly in a bunk bed on this airline?
