Maine Couple Save Moose Calf from Charging Bear

A moose calf is alive thanks to a Maine couple. They realized that a bear was charging down the animal and managed to save the young critter with their pickup truck. The incident happened during a fishing trip last week.

The family ultimately reunited the moose calf with its mom.

Speaking with the Associated Press, Todd Malcolm said he knew he had to do something when he saw a bear chasing down a moose calf.

"I knew what I had to do, and I just did it," Malcolm said. The incident happened when they first saw a moose near Telos Township, Maine. They pulled over hoping to get a photo. "I said to Elvia, I said, 'Grab your phone because you're going to get a chance to get a picture of a moose.'"

Bear vs Truck

That's when a moose calf appeared from the woods. It was running directly at them. A bear was charging down on the animal. Malcom threw his truck into gear.

"I put the truck in drive and I just stepped on the gas," he said. He said he wasn't trying to hurt the bear, just stop it from getting to the calf. It worked.

"Boom, gone, right in the woods," he said.

Wife Elvia Malcolm shared her side of the chaos.

"My heart was racing because I did not want to witness the bear catching the calf," she told the AP. "As soon as the calf got past the truck, and we were able to get the bear to give up the chase, I looked up the road and saw that they were together, the mom and the calf."

Elvia says that she managed to capture part of it on her phone.

"I really thought I probably got like a bug on the windshield when I started to look at them," she said. "I took them through the front windshield of the truck. I wasn't outside the truck. No way was I getting outside the truck."

The couple then continued their trip.
