It's a sad day. Sugar, the surfing dog that went viral thanks to her talent, has died. Her owner confirmed that the poor pooch passed away from cancer at 16.
Sugar had been battling cancer for several weeks. Sadly, the illness was too much for the poor animal. Ryan Rustan, owner of the rescue dog based in Huntington Beach, California, confirmed the animal's death. Taking to Instagram, he said that Sugar had "passed away last night at 3:20 a.m in her daddy's arms."
Ryan wrote, "Sugar The Surfing Dog passed away last night at 3:20 am in her daddy's arms @ryanrustan . Monday. June 14-2011 - March 30. 2026 ... she absolutely loved you guys!! she lived to put smiles on faces, volunteer, to send it !! to change dog surfing forever !!! thank you for loving Sugar, Goodbye my Sugar., i can't believe in writing this .. i'm going to miss you so much."
Sugar the Surfing Dog Dies
Sugar lived more than some dogs ever dreamed of. She was a five-time World Dog Surf Champion and held 19 titles throughout her life. On March 2, Ryan learned that the dog had cancer. Sugar rode her last wave a few days later on March 7. She also served as a therapy dog at the Veterans Affairs Hospital.
Fans took to the comment section to mourn the loss of the pooch.
Another commented, "I'm sorry brother? she will be missed.. she made history ?," while a third added: "You're a good papa! ?? Sugar rest in peace!"
Yet another commented: "The best to ever do it! Rest in paradise to a legend! ???."
Previously, the owner confirmed that time was limited. He had said, "She has only maybe a very short time."
"She's been on the forefront of showing other dogs how to ride a shortboard properly," he also said. "I love her so much. I'm not ready for her to go. But she taught me a lot. She taught me that life's cool."
