Travel + Leisure went on a mission to discover the best place to travel solo in the world, and they found it. During their mission, they spoke with six different travel experts, all of whom independently landed on the same country. Any guess? According to the experts, the best place to travel solo is Japan. To summarize, the experts claimed this was the best choice for various reasons. The main reasons were: "safe streets, intuitive public transit, and a culture that celebrates dining alone."

When speaking to Travel + Leisure, Jessica Klauzenberg of Timbuktu Travel had this to say: "Japan is one of the most rewarding places in the world to travel solo." Then she continued, "It is exceptionally safe, the country itself is immaculately organised and easy to travel in, and the people are thoughtful and sensitive to solo travelers. Solo travel in Japan is a liberating experience."

Digger A Little Deeper

After providing the summary, Travel + Leisure dove into more specifics about why Japan is the best place to travel solo. First, the experts agreed that the logistics in Japan are simple and easy to understand. The majority of the time, one of the most anxiety-inducing parts of travel is trying to figure out how to get around. This is especially stressful when you are alone. However, all those who have been to Japan rave about the ease and convenience of its public transportation.

Another highlight that the experts focused on was that eating alone in Japan is considered an art, not an embarrassment. Perhaps it is just in Western culture, but many people here find eating alone to be awkward or unnerving. However, in Japan, it is normal because "counter service is the norm." They also have vending machines and ticketing systems, all of which make placing your order, sitting at the counter, and having a steaming meal alone seem normal.

Add that to the stunning locations to visit, various fun activities, and delicious cuisine, and it is no wonder that the experts all agree that Japan is the best place to travel solo.
