Hundreds of Thousands of French Fries Wash Up on Beach

Quick, someone get a deep fryer and some ketchup. Over the years, there have been several strange things to wash up on shore. But this might take the whole cake or burger if you will. Hundreds of thousands of French fries washed up on a beach in Sussex, England.

No, the Krusty Krab didn't have a leak. Instead, the fries came from several shipping containers containing food and packaging. These shipping containers accidentally fell of a transport ship earlier this week. That resulted in thousands of bags of fries, or chips as they say in England, washing to shore in the UK.

In total, 16 containers fell from a cargo vessel last month. Everything from onions to bananas to fries ended up in the ocean.

Fries On the Beach

This wasn't a little bit of snacks washing to shore either. In some spots, the fries were as deep as two feet. You can be up to your shins in potatoes. Local Joel Bonnici told BBC he "had to look twice" while going for a walk. He said he was shocked by the sight of all the chips.

"The beach looked like the Caribbean golden sands," he told the outlet.

But it's not the potatoes that have officials concerned. They are more concerned about the plastic packaging. The plastic can be dangerous to the seals.

"I scuba dive quite regularly, and I know what seals are like. If they see the bags they will play with them or try to eat them," he said.

Volunteers are seeking to clean up the beaches. In the meantime, the East Sussex County Council warned beachgoers about visiting. Avoid letting dogs eat the potatoes.

"Please keep dogs on leads as some of the food items washing on to the shoreline may be harmful to them," a spokesperson said.
