Many experienced turkey hunters have seen something go down that might have been unsafe. Five years ago, I actually was witness to a guy shooting another guy’s turkey decoy at first light as the unsafe hunter had decided to stalk in at daylight and not have a good idea of his surroundings. Super dangerous and one of the reasons you have to be very careful on public land.
Simple tips like: If you see another hunter approaching ensure you announce yourself and stand-up from your hide. When packing out a dead turkey hang some hunter orange from your vest or pack or don a blaze orange hat. Little things like these will keep the hunt safe and are excellent tips to pass on to newer hunters.
The first turkey hunting openers are typically reserved for the youth hunt so use it as an opportunity to instill these basic safety tips in to the next generation.
