The Release of 40,000 Mink is Being Called an Act of Domestic Terrorism

The release of nearly 40K mink is being called an incident of 'domestic terrorism'.

A central Minnesota family lost their livelihood after people reported to be animal activists broke open their pens and released nearly 40,000 of them, as a result of which many of them died.

"They are not interested in animal rights, they are interested in chaos," Gudmunson said Tuesday morning about the people who released the mink.

Fur Commission USA, a mink farming industry group, is offering a $10,000 reward for any information leading to the arrest and conviction of the perpetrators.

Authorities believe more than one person was involved in sabotaging the fence. The loss will cost the farm over $750,000.

Evidence potentially points to the trespassers parking about a half-mile away from where they released the animals. Dan Lang, the co-owner of the farm started by his grandfather in 1936, said it has been a traumatic couple of days for he and his employees.

"These people that let these mink out, they gave them a death sentence is what they did," said Lang.

He estimated that 5,000 mink died either from heat stress or from the chaos immediately following their release.

Unfortunately, the family provided pictures of several dead mink shoveled in a front end loader.

"We care for these animals every day of our lives 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. And what breaks my heart is watching my mink die right now."

The FBI arrived to the scene Monday, and Gudmundson  said while the feds are hesitant to call it an act of domestic terrorism, he is not.
